Nicknamed the "Barefoot Diva" for performing without shoes, she started singing around bars in her birthplace of Mindelo before releasing her first commercial record, "La Diva Aux Pieds Nus," in 1988. With hits such as 'Sodade' and 'Petite Pays', it was only a matter of time till her project 'Voz d'Amor' received a Grammy Award in 2004 for Best Contemporary World Music Album.
