Miss Azure McCall and Tennyson Stephens
Home in Waikiki by Popular Demand
Hawaii's favorite jazz singer is heir to the vocal traditions of Sarah Vaughn, Ella Fitzgerald, Carmen McCrae and Billie Holiday as an interpretive artist who makes every song her own. A true Jazz Vocalist is a musician who sings, with all the command of technique, repertoire and stage presence of a master instrumentalist. That is two time Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award-Winner Azure McCall.
Her albums "Body and Soul," "Harlem Nocturne" and "The Gift," are a collection of jazz standards with some offbeat song choices that are unique to Azure. She has appeared as one of the voices on "Lemuria" and sung background background vocals for Macky Feary, C&K and Brother Noland, most notably as one of the vocalists on Noland's "Coconut Girl." When not touring, Azure is teaching a bebop scat style program she wrote for children from ages 8 and above.
Tennyson Stephens began as a Minister of Music at the Church of the Living God, Washington Avenue, Dallas, at the age of twelve years. In 1960, Stephens began a collaboration with Rhetta Hughes and they were discovered by Carol Lawrence and Robert Goulet and signed a management contract with Al Williams (of the Four Step Brothers), which led them to Chicago, Illinois and worldwide performances with Dean Martin, Henny Youngman and Redd Foxx. As a headlining act they performed at Ceasar’s Palace and the Flamingo Hotel in Las Vegas, the Playboy Club circuit, the Copacabana in New York, The King’s Inn in Freeport Grand Bahamas, The Sheraton Hotel in Nassau Grand Bahamas, the Princess in Hamilton Bermuda, the Halekulani and Hawaii Prince hotel and the Marakesh Club and Duc’s Bistro in Honolulu, Hawaii. Other performances include appearances on the Tonight Show With Johnny Carson, The Dean Martin Show, the Merv Griffin Show. After an amicable split from Hughes, Stephens became the conductor with Jack Jones's "The Love Boat” and performed as sideman with Aretha Franklin and the (Ladies Formerly of) the Supremes, in the US and Asia.
Miss McCall and Tennyson were President Barack Obama's choice for his fundraiser dinner at the Mandarin Kahala.
