Join us as we celebrate Nate Chinen and the release of his book Playing Changes: Jazz For the New Century. An Iolani graduate, Nate is one of jazz’s leading critics, whose accolades include a twelve-year stint at The New York Times and ongoing contributions to NPR Music.
Playing Changes is a detailed portrait of the artists and events that have shaped the music of our time. Nate invites fellow Honolulu native Abe Lagrimas to join him in the discussion of the music scene in Honolulu and beyond, and the state of music in this early part of the 21st century.

About Nate Chinen
Nate Chinen has been writing about jazz for more than twenty years. He spent a dozen of them working as a critic for The New York Times, Nate helmed a long-running column for JazzTimes. As the director of editorial content at WBGO, he also works with the multiplatform program Jazz Night in America and contributes a range of coverage to NPR Music.
At the beginning of 2017, Chinen became director of editorial content at WBGO, the global leader in jazz radio, broadcasting from Newark. He manages the full spectrum of jazz coverage at wbgo.org; works closely with Jazz Night in America, a multimedia program hosted by Christian McBride; and writes regularly for NPR Music, about jazz and other genres.
About Abe Lagrimas
Abe Lagrimas Jr. is a musician, composer, educator, and author who plays the drums, vibraphone, ukulele, and studied at Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA. In 2012, he competed in the highly prestigious Thelonious Monk International Jazz Drums Competition and has worked with many different artists such as Kamasi Washington, Dontae Winslow, Barbara Morrison, Michelle Coltrane, Jake Shimabukuro. Abe continues to be an in-demand session musician in Los Angeles.
