In the 1950s and ‘60s, Jimmy Smith, Jack McDuff, Richard “Groove” Holmes, and Larry Young pioneered and popularized the jazz organ trio. For the past quarter–century, Larry Goldings, Peter Bernstein and Bill Stewart have taken that fundamental concept into fresh territory, recording eleven masterful albums under various members’ names or as a collective unit. These rotating roles show the equality of each member’s contribution to the whole and their individual stature as world–class bandleaders. Equally adept at roiling bebop intensity, gentle ballad expressions, and knotty fistfuls of funk, the group has been less active in the last few years, owing to the demands of their individual careers, so every new album and tour is cause for celebration. Ramshackle Serenade (Pirouet) is their first studio session in twelve years and a welcome return for what DownBeat calls “a killer organ trio barrage that’s deep in the pocket.”
