Mingus High School Festival
Whether at the bass or composing, Charles Mingus' music represents the best of jazz: a deep emotional connection, an infectious rhythmic pulse, and fascinating harmonies and melodies, all with the purpose of exploring the human condition and decrying injustice. After his death in 1979, Charles’ widow Sue Mingus became the devoted steward of his legacy. Sue has ensured that Charles’ work would live on through the production of many records and the maintenance of the legacy bands dedicated to his music, as well as through educational initiatives established in Mingus’ name. Once again, Jazz Standard is proud to bring together the exceptional players of the Mingus Big Band with some of today’s most promising high school jazz musicians.
