Kulāiwi - Native Lands
Featuring Lehua Kalima Alvarez, Kawika Kahiapo and Shawn Pimental
With Hula by Pono Fernandez
Lehua Kalima Alvarez and Shawn Kekoa Pimental - is proud to debut their new self-titled album, Kulāiwi-Native Lands! This album features 15 mele, a mix of originals and classic mele Hawai‘i, written by some of Hawai‘i's favorite artists and haku mele.
Kulāiwi was formed to reconnect kānaka to ‘āina through mele, the thread that connects the continuum of cultural knowledge. Kulāiwi's mission is to serve as a link in the chain of aloha ‘āina transmission, and believes that it is their kuleana to share music that encourages the listener to take an active role in aloha ‘āina. If these mele cause one person to ask a question, re-think their connectivity to land and culture, or want to learn more about ‘ike kupuna, then the work has served its purpose. Through music, may ‘āina and lāhui heal and thrive.
